How can governance systems create meaningful opportunities for people to influence the decisions that affect their lives?, Marking the International Day of Democracy 2026, this session will explore how deliberative democracy can foster greater agency and ownership by bringing diverse voices into public decision-making. Through reflections on international experience and citizens' assemblies, participants will discuss how participation, dialogue and inclusion can strengthen trust and contribute to more responsive and effective governance. During this event, International IDEA will introduce the Integrated Framework for Protecting Elections and its key resources. Representatives from the EMBs of Finland and Panama will share experiences and lessons learned from implementing the Framework in their national contexts. Democratic elections are essential for ensuring the functioning of democratic societies. However, when electoral challenges are of significant scope and not appropriately managed, they can undermine the integrity of electoral processes and the credibility of election results.
